Here you can find the answers to the most Frequently
Asked Questions!
What is ordinance testing?
Ordinance testing checks the integrity of the exterior sewer
line. It was devised to help maintain an aging system and
protect the environment.
When do I have to have
it done?
Testing is required at point of sale, change of title, addition
or remodel.
How long is testing good
for?
Five years.
How is the testing done?
The access point (clean outs) to the exterior line are plugged
and the line is filled with air pressure. A passing line needs
to hold 3.5 PSI of pressure for 5 minutes.
What is a clean out?
A clean out is an opening in the line that provides access
for cleaning and testing. Ordinance requires two clean outs
outside the foundation; one by the house and one by the property
line. The clean outs must be to grade and boxed.
What is "grade"?
Level with the ground.
What does a failing test
mean?
A failing test indicates a leak in the line that can be caused
by a variety of reasons; root intrusion, shear break or loose
coupling are the most common. Sewage is leaking into the environment
and the line requires repair.
How do you find the leak?
The leak is located by testing small sections of pipe at a
time. This process isolates the exact location within a range
and reduces unnecessary excavation.
